When you have diarrhoea, your body loses salts and fluids, which can leave
you feeling tired and weak. Most people typically recover in 1-5 days from a
bout of diarrhoea, but for quick relief from diarrhoea, there are three key things
you can do*:
*If symptoms last longer than 48 hours, you develop a fever over 38’C, or you have blood or mucus in your stool, you should seek medical advice.
Your body loses fluids when you have diarrhoea; so to avoid dehydration you should take regular drinks of water. Try to avoid drinking alcohol or milk, as they can irritate your gut.
Some people also take rehydration salts, which are sachets of powder containing a mixture of glucose, sodium chloride, potassium chloride and disodium hydrogen citrate. You dilute the salts in water and they help treat the symptoms of dehydration and replace fluids lost during a bout of diarrhoea.
You should try to eat high carbohydrates foods like pasta, rice or bread, if you are experiencing symptoms of diarrhoea. If you feel sick and don’t feel up to eating, you should still try to drink fluids to prevent dehydration.
